Herbal First Aid

The need for first aid occurs frequently in the home and, yet, most people don't realize that an abundant pharmacopeia is right at their fingertips. The following is a brief listing of some simple home treatments.

*Bruises and Sprains - Witch hazel is a good astringent for the skin. When applied with sterile, absorbent cotton promptly to small bumps and bruises, it will halt swelling.

*Minor Burns - Immediately apply the cool inside surface of and Aloe Vera leaf to reduce pain, speed healing, and leave a protective seal against infection. Pure vanilla extract also works to reduce blistering of minor burns.

*Neuralgia and Stiffness - Horseradish, chopped and mixed with a little water, makes a good heat producing compress.

*Sore Throat - Purple sage tea is an excellent treatment for sore throats. It is antiseptic and healing for the inflammation of the mouth, throat and tonsils.

*Stings and Insects Bites - Wasp stings are alkaline: apply the inside surface of a houseleek leaf, onion slices or a dab of vinegar ( if possible, thyme vinegar ). Bee stings and ant bites are acid: apply baking soda dissolved in ice-cold water. Also, an aspirin dissolved in water and applied to the skin will relieve pain and swelling.

*Travel Sickness - The best treatment to settle the stomach and help prevent nausea is an infusion of ginger root. Tea and gingersnaps are a yummy snack to keep something on your stomach.
